The salt pans of Maras, Peru are a historical treasure and centuries-old community tradition.
Salt is the most important ingredient in your kitchen. Ditch the chemically refined table salt and use nature's purest.
During industrialization in the 1900s, companies began selling chemically refined salt to consumers. The low price and perception that anything machined was higher quality than anything hand-harvested quickly led to the popularity of today's major salt companies. Over the past 80 years, demand for Maras’ salt has been so low that farmers are no longer able to make a living and centuries of tradition are at risk.
There's only a few places on earth where salt is harvested at this elevation. The community of Maras, Peru has owned and operated these salt ponds for the past 600 years.
Each pinch pot is handmade from teak wood by a local artisan community in Bali, Indonesia. We believe in sustainability and quality.

The salt farmers of Maras fill their ponds with water that originates from an underground aquifer and salt deposit that date back millions of years. This salty, warm water exits the Qoripujio Mountain and is diverted to the thousands of ponds on the hillside. The ponds are then constantly tended to over the next few months as the sun evaporates the water – leaving behind only the salt crystals. The crystals are then collected and brought to the community storeroom where it is packed and sold around the region.
10,000ft in the Andes Mountains sits the community of Maras, Peru. The community works together to maintain their open air salt ponds just as they’ve done for the past 600 years. Each pond is owned by the families and have been passed down from generation to generation.
We believe salt should be pinched and tossed, not poured or shaken.
Most of the salt we eat is heavily refined and a nasty cocktail of microplastic, aluminum, and other added chemicals. Only Salt is completely natural and free of any human pollution. Take care of yourself.
